Research Task: Dance Music
- What makes all of these music videos from the dance music genre?-All these videos include a performer/dancer and there is usually a story line in a way, for example, in the first video the girl on roller skates is spreading dance in a city through the smoke on her shoes. This could be taken as a metaphor for how dance connects people from different backgrounds etc. In the second video it follows a guy and his group of friends as they go about their everyday life and how there life includes dance in most parts of it. The last video doesn't really have a story line per say, as it focuses on a group of girls in a house and they are just dancing. In all of the videos, the clothes are relatively similar as they are all wearing brightly coloured sports clothes. This seems to be a big part of the dance genre, so I will keep that in mind when planning my own video. The songs on top all have a similar beat, and there will be a tune with a sort of techno beat on top.
- Explore how the artists are using representation to appeal to their target audience in these three videos by picking out key frames from the video to analyse.
These are some scenes in the three videos which i believe shows the artist trying to relate to their target audiences. All these different scenes show the different social groups and ages, and this shows that the artists want whoever is watching and listening to their song to be able to relate to it. They do this by having many different aged actors in their video as they know that lots of people of different ages will be watching the videos, so they need a figure in them that they can relate to. This makes it more likely that the viewer of the video is going to like it as they have a character that they can relate to.
- What other music videos could you find from the same genre? Outline two and explain why you think they are termed dance.
These would be termed dance as they both include a main character and story line, and then there is obviously dancing in the video. The music also follows the main conventions of a dance song as there is a tune in the background with a techno beat over the top which is good to dance to. The videos also follow the conventions of a dance video as the characters and extras tend to wear relatively brightly coloured clothes, and the dancing is usually followed by a tracking shot.
Dance History
Dance music is music composed specifically to facilitate or accompany dancing. It can be either a whole musical piece or part of a larger musical arrangement. In terms of performance, the major categories are live dance music and recorded dance music. While there exist attestations of the combination of dance and music in ancient times (for example Ancient Greek vases sometimes show dancers accompanied by musicians), the earliest Western dance music that we can still reproduce with a degree of certainty are the surviving medieval dances. In the Baroque period, the major dance styles were noble court dances (see Baroque dance). In the classical music era, the minuet was frequently used as a third movement, although in this context it would not accompany any dancing. The waltz also arose later in the classical era.
Modern popular dance music initially emerged from late 19th century's Western ballroom and social dance music. During the early 20th century, ballroom dancing gained popularity among the working class who attended public dance halls. Dance music became enormously popular during the 1920s. In the 1930s, called the Swing era, Swing music was the popular dance music in America. In the 1950s, rock and roll became the popular dance music. The late 1960s saw the rise of soul and R&B music. The rise of disco in the early 1970s led to dance music becoming popular with the public. By the late 1970s, electronic dance music was developing. This music, made using electronics, is a style of popular music commonly played in nightclubs, radio stations, shows and raves. Many sub genres of electronic dance music have evolved.
