The male gaze in Papa Roach- ...To Be Loved

The male gaze in a music video of my choice-
Papa Roach- ...To Be Loved

We can see in the music video, and the image below, that this video is aimed at a male audience as the Rock genre has generally more male listeners than female. Because of this, the video is focused on the lead singer, Jacoby Shaddix, with lots of girls, some of which wearing revealing outfits. Jacoby is used to represent a situation that men would like to relate to, so the male audience do this.

The singer Jacoby looks at the predominantly male audience as if to say, this is what you can be like if you live like me ( a rocker). The audience may look back at him with a sense of want or jealousy as that is the life they want to have. However, the female audience may be looking at the video with a sense of disgust as they know that that is a dream and not a reality, but also because the women in the video are dressed very scarcely, they may dislike the video because of that reason.

In this video, the focus for the audience is the band playing their instruments and also the party which surrounds them. At the party there are lots of women dancing around quite sexually and provocatively, which appeals to the male gaze. Because this is the focus point of the video, the viewer can see that the video is aimed at the heterosexual male audience. The outfits that the women are wearing are provocative because they are mainly wearing bikini tops and really revealing bottoms. The makeup is also heavy which suggests that women need to wear makeup to be attractive. I do not believe that the makeup and outfits are necessary as they may be part of the fact that less females listen to rock music, as they feel it represents them in a bad light.

There is a clear notion of who has the power in this video, as the men take charge of the women that are dancing around them. This is also portrayed though the fact that there are many slow motion shots  focusing on the women's bodies, yet the camera only focuses on the male as a whole and not just for their bodies. The male side of the audience may also feel like they have power in this video as they may look at the band and think that because the band can treat women as objects, so can they.
