Doctor Foster and Top Of The Lake
Doctor Foster and Top Of The Lake
- Who is the main character and how are they being represented through their character traits?
- How does this fit with your previous conceptions of female stereotypes?
- Research who produced and directed both shows and consider how this may alter the way the characters are constructed.
- Who is the target audience for these shows and how does this alter how they are being constructed by the director?
Doctor Foster
- The main character is the lady Dr Foster, and in the trailer she is being represented as weak minded and paranoid. This is due to the fact that she thinks her husband might be cheating on her, yet does not appear to take much action at first. This represents the female gender badly as it implies that if a woman finds out she is being cheated on, she will not do anything about it and try to forget about what might have happened.
- This does conform to the female stereotypes that I have seen before, as it shows women to be weak and not stand up for themselves, or what they believe in.
- It was produced by Roanna Ben, Greg Brenman, Jude Liknaitzky and Matthew Read. This means that 3 out of the 4 producers were male, which is probably why the view of women is very stereotypical. The directors were Jeremy Lovering, Tom Vaughan and Bruce Goodison, which are all males, and again would lead to a stereotypical view of woman being portrayed in the series.
- I would say the target audience for this show is unisex, yet the direction of the series may be more geared towards male viewers.
Top Of The Lake
- The lead character is Dr Robin Griffin, and she is presented as being inexperienced, and inferior to other male detectives.
- Again, this does conform to the stereotypes in modern day society, saying that men are better at some jobs than women are, even in today's day and age when women and men are supposed to be equal.
- The producers of Top of the lake however, are mainly women, which would make you believe that women would be presented in a good light. Also out of the 3 directors, 2 are women, which again surprises me as the representation of women in this series could be better.
- I would again say that the target audience is unisex, yet this may be targeted slightly more towards a female audience.
